Arcs |
Understanding the importance of arcs in movement will help animators create more fluid and natural movements, from the smallest to the broadest of actions.
|
Most natural movement, human and animal, takes place on an arc. From the flick of a finger, to the swing of a baseball bat or a moving tail, the majority natural movement occurs on wavelike arcs or in figure eight like movements.
ARCS EXAMPLES
The Pendulum Swing
You will create the animation using a coin and a frame grabbe
- Draw the two circled keyframe positions, 1 and 7 as indicated in the diagram.
- Drawn the breakdown position, (4) in the midpoint position as indicated by the timing chart.
- Make sure all line segments are the same length and that the centers of gravity are positioned along the arc, or path of movement.
- Now draw positions 3 halfway between 1 and 4, and position 5 half way between 4 and 7, as the time chart indicates.
- Now draw position 2 halfway between 1 and 3, and position 6 halfway between 5 and 7, as indicated by the chart.
- Make sure all the circles are the same size, and that the centers are aligned to the arc.
- Begin animation.
- It is important to save and save often. It is also important for me to see the process and layers you have put into your projects.
- Submit your .MP4 file to the Coin Eases folder in Google Drive
- Due at the end of the lesson
Let's Review our WorK
Rubric for Rough/Layout of Movement Along an Arc
10 - Demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the concepts and principles of movement along arcs and are executed at an excellent level of proficiency and artistic ability. Notes are complete and illustrations are rendered accurately, and done neatly. The 7 required positions are clearly defined and labeled in the layout.
8 - Demonstrates a proficient understanding of the concepts and principles covered and executed at an above average level of proficiency and artistic ability. Notes are mostly complete and illustrations are rendered accurately and somewhat neatly. The 7 required positions are somewhat clearly defined in the layout.
6 - Demonstrates a rudimentary understanding of the concepts and principles covered and executed at an average level of proficiency and artistic ability. Notes are incomplete and illustrations lack accuracy and neatness. The 7 required positions are not very clearly defined, but are present.
2 - Demonstrates a lack of understanding of the concepts of movement along arcs. Movements are incomplete or off track. The artistic level of proficiency is below average. Notes are incomplete or not present and lack accuracy and neatness.
0 - Demonstrates little understanding of the concepts of movement along arcs. Movements or positions are incomplete, off track, or missing entirely. The artistic level of proficiency is far below average. Notes are missing, work is messy. The 7 required positions are not present.
Create Your own Squash and Stretch - BE Creative
After students review model examples, students will then animate their on original Squash and Stretch cycle again incorporating the knowledge they have gained during all of the assessments and review of examples.
